Design of the shopping basket survey

1 documents for this subject

Summary

The shopping basket survey is a large-scale retail surveillance programme that we aim to start in 2025. It will sample a wide range of foods that people buy in a typical food shopping trip in Scotland. We will then test these foods for a variety of different hazards.

The ultimate aim of the survey is to make sure that the food Scottish consumers buy is safe and authentic. It will also link in with other sampling programmes and horizon scanning work, which will help us to better understand risks to the Scottish food chain.

The survey will be large-scale and complex, so we commissioned a design project to determine:

  • how to choose which foods to sample
  • what dangers we should test for
  • other details of how to conduct the survey

The resulting framework forms the basis for the shopping basket survey sampling plan.
