1 documents for this subject

Summary

Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE) is an annual report that details sampling and analysis carried out by UK authorities on levels of radioactive substances in food and the environment. On 02 November 2023 we publish the 28th edition, which describes the activities undertaken during 2022.

These monitoring activities are designed or undertaken by the Environment Agency, Food Standards Agency, Food Standards Scotland, Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

The key finding from the 2022 report is that exposure to the public from all sources of artificial radioactivity in food and the environment was low and well within the legal limit of 1 millisievert (mSv) per year. Overall, between 2021 and 2022 there were no significant changes to the radioactivity measured in food and the environment.

This demonstrates that radioactivity in food and the environment is safe.
